Four Reasons You (Maybe) Shouldn’t Drink Coffee

We love coffee—roasting it, brewing it, and sharing it with our community of fellow coffee lovers across the U.S. We also enjoy coffee as a health food. Coffee drinking has been dose-dependently associated with lower all-cause and cause-specific mortality. That said, honestly, coffee isn’t for everyone. We’re compelled to take an honest look at why you might want to skip that next cup. Whether you’re curious, cautious, or just in need of a break, here are eight reasons you might want to say “no thanks” to coffee (at least for today).
- Caffeine Sensitivity
People don’t all process coffee the same. If coffee leaves you jittery, anxious, or wide awake at 2 a.m., your body might be telling you it’s time to cut back—or switch to decaf. Progesterone and estrogen slow down the metabolism of caffeine, so people who are pregnant or on oral contraceptives or other exogenous hormone therapy might be more sensitive to its effects. - Sleep Struggles
Coffee’s half-life can stretch for hours, especially if you’re an afternoon sipper. If you’re tossing and turning at night, your beloved brew could be the culprit. Cut back on your afternoon coffee, try switching to herbal tea after lunch, and see if your sleep improves. -
Stomach Issues
Coffee is naturally acidic, but not extremely so–it has a pH level of around 5, which is similar to sparkling water. However, that acidity, and likely its high level of polyphenols, can irritate sensitive stomachs, leading to heartburn or digestive discomfort. If your tummy is uncomfortable after your morning cup, it might be worth experimenting with low-acid blends, trying a weaker dilution—or taking a break.

Medication Interactions
Caffeine can interact with some medications, like certain antibiotics and stimulants. If you’re on prescription meds, double-check with your pharmacist or doctor about how coffee might affect you.
The Bottom Line
Coffee is wonderful—but it isn’t a must for everyone. If coffee just isn’t your thing, that’s perfectly okay. There are plenty of other delicious ways to start your day (and we won’t take it personally).
And if you ever want to talk decaf or tea–you know where to find us.
Stay well,
